In September, HHS student Alexis Juncaj, 10, formed a petition to reverse the new grading system’s rule of not having the students’ percentages in the grade book.  Juncaj is a representative of the sophomore student council, so she frequently heard from the student body about the new grading system. This constant anger lit in her the initial resistance to the school board’s decision. She said she heard endless complaints about the newly placed rule and decided it was a time for a change.

“I believe the kids had a right to know,” Juncaj said.  Juncaj believes that being uninformed about the true percentage of an individual’s grade can have detrimental effects upon the outcome of someone’s GPA. She believes this stems from not allowing the individual to have constant knowledge of their true grade rather than just a letter sitting in the grade books.

After creating the petition and bringing it to school, she managed to get over 120 signatures from the students attending HHS.  “It came as a shock to the board due to the amount of signatures,” Juncaj said.

According to Juncaj, after she talked to the board they told her they had received endless emails and phone calls from upset parents and students. She gave the petition to the board after she gathered the signatures and the board managed to reach to a  consensus and decided to bring back the percentages after considering the effects of not having percentages in the grade book.

“I believed in the possibilities of the HHS students from the start,” Juncaj said. “I knew we could push boundaries together.”

Using this belief she managed to band together with her peers and create a voice to allow the student body of Harrison to be heard.
